Following the Corolla Cross GR-S, the Toyota Hilux has fallen prey to the white lab coats at the GR department to give South Africa’s best-selling bakkie a sportier derivative. Here is pricing and specification on the Toyota Hilux GR Sport.

The Hilux GR Sport is a new, improved version of South Africa’s best-selling vehicle. It has been designed to be more dynamic and capable than ever before, with a number of upgrades that make it stand out from the crowd.

The model is very similar to the Legend-grade specification, but the standard spec still includes a wide range of features (with the exception of an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and JBL audio). The panoramic view monitor is a new addition too.

The GR-Sport (aka GR-S) usually refers to cosmetic and handling upgrades, but the Hilux variant also has a performance trick up its sleeve. The power output of the 2,8-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine has been increased to 165 kW (+15), and torque has been increased by 50 N.m to a maximum of 550 N.m. This has been accomplished through a special ECU calibration that works in conjunction with revised 6-speed automatic transmission mapping and lock-up control to ensure optimal power delivery. These enhancements result in a 0.65-second decrease in 0-100 km/h sprint time. The top speed is stated to be 175 km/h.

Only one drivetrain configuration is available: a 4×4 transaxle mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with Auto LSD.

The Hilux GR-S has a bespoke design from the standard bakkie with designers adding sporty cues throughout. It has a large black front grille, a horizontal crossbar, and Toyota lettering adding to the ominous look. The LED headlights are special with vertical air ducts with LED fog lamps.

A closer look will show that the bumpers are based on the Raider model design. They are wider and have black overfenders with contrasting inserts. This makes the GR Sport look more aggressive. The mirror caps, door handles, side steps, and rear styling bar are all black with GR branding

The Hilux GR-S rides on 17-inch black alloys with machined faces, and it has 265/65 R17 off-road tyres. It also has functional skid plates front and rear, which protect the underbody during any adventurous off-road driving. The side mouldings are red, and at the back, there’s a diffuser with twin exhaust tips.

Even though it’s not small, everything about the Hilux GR-S’s design was carefully thought out to create a unique look that will turn heads whether you’re on or off the beaten path.

The updated interior design features for the GR-S model include:

The GR branding is also found on the Push Start button and the centre console. In Legend models, striking carbon-fibre trim replaces the brushed finish, and red accent trim signals the GR-S’ performance credentials. The racing-inspired front seats include Alcantara inserts, GR badging on the headrests, red accent panels, and power driver’s seat adjustment. These updates give the car a more premium and sophisticated feel while still looking sporty. So whether you’re out on the open road or cruising around town, the updated interior of the GR-S is sure to please.

The new monotube shock absorbers are paired with stiffer coil springs under the skin to improve high-speed stability and handling response. The wheel and tyre package includes bespoke 17-inch Titanium alloy wheels. In contrast, the tyre package has been updated with taller profile 265/65 R17 rubber for improved off-road performance.

The result is a more responsive and predictable vehicle on the road while still tackling challenging terrain when necessary. In addition, the new suspension setup provides a more comfortable ride, even on rough roads. The updated suspension system is a welcome change that should improve the driving experience for all kinds of drivers.

The GR product hierarchy is represented as a pyramid, with the first layer being GR Parts (currently under investigation for SA), which allows customers to inject GR flavour into their standard model variant, followed by the GR-Sport moniker, which offers cosmetic and dynamic handling enhancements. The third tier is occupied by full-fledged GR performance models (GR86, GR Yaris, GR Supra).

At the same time, the fourth and final layer is GRMN – which represents the most advanced level of performance tuning. This is evident in cars like the Corolla Cross GR Sport and Hilux GR Sport, which take regular models and add sporty touches inside and out.

There are different types of cars in the GR range. Some, like the 86, Supra and Yaris, have more aggressive styling and higher power outputs. Other cars, like the Corolla Furia, are at the top of the range with track-honed engineering and race-bred pedigree. So whether you’re looking for a little extra sportiness or full-on performance, there’s a GR model to suit your needs.
