Continuing on from the moveable weight foundation of the MP-600 driver, the ST-G 220 joins the successful ST-Z and ST-X in Mizuno’s current model line-up, utilising many of the same technologies.
The new SAT2041 (Super/ Alloy/ Titanium/ 20% Vanadium/4% Aluminium/1% Tin) Beta Ti face delivers more tensile strength and flexibility to create increased ball speed on both centre strikes and mis-hits. The multi-thickness face particularly adds speed improvements low on the face by working with the optimised ‘Wave Sole’.
A carbon fibre construction saves weight, while also improving the sound and feel so well known in Mizuno products.
Where the ST-G 220 stands out in the company’s line, and category more broadle, is through the three weight tracks and two moveable weights that allow for launch and backspin adjustments, as well as greater draw and fade capabilities.
"Having that little bit of extra adjustability is especially useful out on tour - where we can fine-tune a player's flight. Or make an adjustment for a particular tournament when the player doesn't want the feel of a completely new driver," Mizuno’s Chris Voshall said.
The driver achieves this via shorter lateral weight tracks that allowed for the new centre weight port, meaning unlike other adjustable drivers that have typically focused on either back spin or left-right bias, the ST-G 220 is capable of both. With forgiveness and feel remaining similar in all settings.
“The ST-G 220 has so much more effective movement of weight along both the X and the Z axis,” Voshall said. “We can set it to be very low spin, a more playable mid spin, heavily fade or draw biased and just about anything in-between.”
Beyond the usefulness of the new model with the world’s best players not having to complete change drivers to dial in a new flight, the ST-G 220 allows average golfers to adjust their driver as their game changes. A ‘Quick Switch’ hosel also offering four degrees of adjustability.
Featuring a deeper face and more compact 460cc profile to suit better players, the ST-G 220 will be available around Australia from October 15.
